In March 2017, Community College of Denver (CCD) Foundation held its second annual Breakfast of Champions event in the Tivoli Turnhalle on the Auraria campus. The annual event honors the Foundation’s scholarship donors and the recipients they support.
Karen McNeil-Miller, president & CEO of the Colorado Health Foundation was this year’s keynote speaker. Ms. McNeil-Miller spoke about the importance of community college in her life, and motivated CCD students to continue moving forward on their educational journey. In her remarks, she strongly encouraged students to advocate for themselves and ask for help when needed.
Sustainability Award – The Herbert and Judy Paige Family Foundation Scholarship
This scholarship offered to financially help CCD students access college. The Paige Scholarship has a preference for students in professional programs (e.g., Dental Hygiene) and those in business or engineering intending to transfer to a four-year school, where The Paige Foundation often continues to provide them with scholarship support. This scholarship is one of the most competitive scholarships at CCD because it covers half of the total costs for tuition, books, materials and fees.
Engagement Award – American GI Forum 5281 Chapter Scholarship
This scholarship is a matching scholarship offered by the CCD Foundation. The AGIF 5281 Chapter provides information and support for Hispanic Veterans and motivates those interested in education, scholarships, and post-secondary educational opportunity.
Impact Award – Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative
The governor and General Assembly created the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative (COSI) in 2014 with the goal of establishing a statewide network of scholarship programs. Legislation called for the Scholarship Initiative to ensure that students are not just given financial support, but also the tools necessary to succeed and earn a postsecondary degree or certificate.
Lifetime Achievement Award – Francie Anhut Scholarship Fund
Francie Anhut was the executive director of the CCD Foundation until she passed away in the fall of 2016. The Francie Anhut Scholarship was established by CCD staff in her name and is an endowed scholarship ($1,000 per year offered in perpetuity) created to assist students with demonstrated financial need.
